Twilio uses pay-as-you-go billing that continues until you explicitly disable services or close your account. Simply deleting apps or stopping API calls won't stop charges. You need to deactivate services through the Console.

Step-by-Step: Cancel Twilio

These steps work for most Twilio accounts. Enterprise customers may need to contact support directly for account closure.

01

Log in to Twilio Console

Go to console.twilio.com and sign in with your Twilio credentials. Make sure you're accessing the correct account if you manage multiple projects.

02

Navigate to Account Settings

Click on your account name in the top right corner, then select Account from the dropdown menu to access your account settings.

03

Access Billing & Usage

In the left sidebar, click on Billing then Billing Overview. This shows your current usage and active services that are generating charges.

04

Disable Active Services

Go to each active service (Phone Numbers, Messaging, Voice, etc.) and release or disable them. This stops future charges from those services.

05

Close Account (Optional)

For complete account closure, contact Twilio Support through the Console or submit a support ticket requesting account termination and final billing.

Twilio-specific things to know

Twilio's usage-based billing can work differently than typical subscriptions. These tips cover common billing scenarios.

Usage charges continue until disabled
Simply stopping API calls doesn't stop billing. You must actively release phone numbers and disable services in the Console to stop charges.
Phone numbers have monthly fees
Twilio phone numbers incur monthly charges even if unused. Release them from the Phone Numbers section to stop these recurring fees.

Before cancelling Twilio

Check these points to avoid issues with your cancellation and final billing.

1. Download usage reports and logs

Export any call logs, message history, or usage reports you need for records before closing your account, as these won't be accessible afterward.

2. Check for active webhooks and integrations

Review any webhooks or third-party integrations using your Twilio credentials, as these may cause errors once your account is disabled.

3. Review final billing period

Usage charges are billed monthly, so check when your current billing cycle ends to understand your final charges and avoid surprise fees.

Other options to consider

If costs are the issue, you might be able to reduce usage or switch to a different pricing tier instead of cancelling completely.

Reduce your Twilio usage

Scale back to only essential services or reduce usage limits to lower monthly costs while keeping your account active.

  • Release unused phone numbers

  • Disable non-critical services

  • Set usage alerts and limits

  • Switch to lower-volume pricing tiers
