Stash-specific things to know

Stash subscriptions can work differently depending on your plan or how you signed up. These tips cover common edge cases.

You must empty your account first
Stash won't let you cancel if you have any money in investments or Smart Cash. Transfer everything out before attempting to cancel.
Fund transfers take 3-5 business days
Factor in transfer time when planning your cancellation. You'll keep paying monthly fees until the account is fully closed.
Stock Sales aren't instant
If you have investments, you'll need to sell them first. Stock sales typically settle in 1-2 business days before you can transfer the funds.

Before you cancel, keep this in mind

These details can affect your cancellation timing or whether it goes through properly.

1. Check for pending transactions

Make sure all automatic investments, transfers, and stock purchases have completed before starting the cancellation process.

2. Download tax documents first

Get copies of your 1099 forms and transaction history for tax purposes before closing your account permanently.

3. Note the billing cycle

Stash charges monthly fees regardless of account balance. Cancel before your next billing date to avoid another charge.

Other options

If monthly fees are the issue, you might be able to downgrade instead of cancelling completely.

Downgrade your Stash plan

Stash offers multiple subscription tiers with different features and fees. You might be able to switch to a cheaper plan.

  • Stash Growth ($3/month) - Basic investing and banking

  • Stash+ ($9/month) - Adds market insights and rewards

  • Stock-Back Card ($9/month) - Focus on the debit card rewards
