QuickBooks subscriptions often come with annual commitments and auto-renewal terms. If you purchased through a reseller or accountant, you may need to cancel through them instead of your QuickBooks account. Check your plan details before cancelling to avoid unexpected charges.

QuickBooks-specific things to know

QuickBooks subscriptions can work differently depending on your plan or how you signed up. These tips cover common edge cases.

Annual plans can't be refunded after renewal
If you have an annual QuickBooks plan, you must cancel before your renewal date to avoid being charged for another full year. Intuit doesn't offer refunds once annual plans renew.
Desktop versions work differently
QuickBooks Desktop software purchases are one-time payments, not subscriptions. Only QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Payroll are subscription services that can be cancelled.
ProAdvisor discounts may affect cancellation
If your subscription includes a ProAdvisor discount through an accountant, cancelling may remove the discount if you resubscribe later.

Before cancelling QuickBooks

These details can affect your cancellation timing or whether it goes through properly.

1. Check who's billing you

Look at your credit card or bank statement to see if you're being charged by Intuit directly or through a reseller. If it's not Intuit, you'll need to cancel through the reseller.

2. Your data stays accessible for one year

After cancelling, you can still view and export your QuickBooks data for 12 months. After that, you'll need to resubscribe to access your files.

3. Consider your renewal date

Annual subscribers must cancel before their renewal date to avoid being charged for another year. Monthly subscribers can cancel anytime and won't be charged for the next month.

Other options to consider

If cost is your concern, you might be able to downgrade your plan or switch billing cycles instead of cancelling completely.

Downgrade your QuickBooks plan

QuickBooks offers multiple tiers with different features and pricing. You might be able to switch to a cheaper plan that still meets your business needs.

  • Simple Start - Basic invoicing and expense tracking

  • Essentials - Includes bill management and time tracking

  • Plus - Adds inventory tracking and project profitability

  • Advanced - Full reporting and analytics features

Switch Your Billing Cycle

Switching from monthly to annual billing can save up to 50% on your QuickBooks subscription cost.

Annual billing saves 20-50% compared to monthly

Check for Bundles

QuickBooks is often bundled with payroll services, payments processing, or other Intuit products at a discount.

  • QuickBooks + Payroll bundle

  • QuickBooks + Payments processing

  • Full Intuit business suite

Alternative ways to cancel QuickBooks

If you can't cancel through your QuickBooks account, you may need to go through phone support or your reseller. The right option depends on how you're being billed.

TV Provider / Reseller

If you purchased QuickBooks through an accountant, retailer, or business partner, you'll need to cancel through them instead of your QuickBooks account.

  • Accounting firms and bookkeepers

  • Business consultants

  • Office supply stores (Staples, Office Depot)

  • Technology resellers

Phone

You can also cancel your QuickBooks subscription by calling Intuit customer support directly.
