Nintendo Switch Online cancellation tips

Nintendo handles subscriptions differently than most services. These tips cover common edge cases.

Family plans require admin access
Only the Nintendo Account that purchased the Family membership can cancel it. Other family members can't turn off renewal from their accounts.
Console settings work too
You can also cancel directly from your Switch by going to System Settings > Nintendo eShop > Account Information > Nintendo Switch Online.
Expansion Pack downgrades to Individual
If you cancel Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, you'll automatically get the base Individual plan until your billing period ends.

Before you cancel, keep this in mind

These details can affect your Nintendo Switch Online cancellation or access.

1. Your subscription stays active until renewal date

After cancelling, you keep full Nintendo Switch Online access until your current billing period ends. There's no immediate loss of features.

2. Cloud saves remain for a limited time

Your cloud save data is kept for about 6 months after cancellation. You can redownload saves if you resubscribe within that window.

3. Free games require active subscription

NES and SNES games from Nintendo Switch Online become unplayable once your subscription ends, even if you downloaded them previously.

Alternatives to cancelling your subscription

If cost is the issue, you might be able to downgrade or share instead of cancelling completely.

Downgrade your Nintendo Switch Online plan

If you have the Expansion Pack but mainly want online multiplayer and cloud saves, downgrading to Individual saves money while keeping core features.

  • Individual ($20/year) - Online play and cloud saves

  • Family ($35/year) - Up to 8 accounts

  • Expansion Pack ($50/year) - Adds N64 and Genesis games

Share Your Plan

Family plans support up to 8 Nintendo Accounts for $35/year instead of individual plans at $20 each. Perfect for families or close friends.

Other cancellation methods

If you can't access your Nintendo Account online, you may need to use one of these alternative methods.
